Church Planter - North India
Suraj is serving as the pastor of a church plant in North India, which began in June 2012. He has a burden to reach other villages in North India and to equip men to plant more churches among the Hindu and Muslim people.
Testimony of Conversion
I was born in 1975 in a Hindu family. When I was 12 years old, my mother became emotionally ill. Because of this, my family always used to fight and we never had peace in our home. At that time I was a worshiper of the Hindu gods, and so I would pray to them so that my mom would be healed, but these gods never answered and my mother remained in her condition. After many years, when I had become an adult, we finally went to the doctor and my mother’s health began to improve after just a few days.
Soon after, my son began to experience a similar illness to that which my mother had. He became very emotionally ill and as a result our whole family faced many problems. We took him to many different doctors, and we even took him to witch doctors, but my son remained disturbed.
One day, while I was returning home and feeling completely hopeless, I ran into a Christian friend of mine who was a pastor of a church. He was sitting outside his medical store, and when he saw me, he recognized that I was very sad. He asked me what was bothering me so much, and I explained to him all of the problems I was facing. He said that he was going to pray for my son and me, and he read a verse from the Bible, Matthew 11:28.
Before that day, my son had not slept for many nights. The same night that this Christian man prayed for my son, he slept properly. It was then that I believed in Jesus Christ. This man continued to pray for my son, and he also told me about his church and I started to go with him, along with the rest of my family. Through this brother I came to believe that Jesus is the only true God and that He is the only Son of God. I understood that Jesus came to earth and was born, and that He lived a perfect life and died to give us salvation. I repented and started following Jesus.
After my conversion, I started going to church every Sunday and I began to learn and read from the Word of God. When people I knew found out that I was going to church, they opposed me and tried to convince me not to go to church any longer. They said that if I continued to go to church, then they would force me to leave the community. The Lord helped me to face all of the persecution from the community.
As I grew in God’s Word and as this same brother discipled me and taught me from the Scriptures, I began to learn so many things. My desire to serve Him grew and I did a theological training course to help me to understand more of the Scriptures. Eventually this brother allowed me to preach together with him in the church where he was the pastor. After about four years of helping him at the church, we planted a church in another village, and for the last year I have been the pastor of that church plant.
We have faced great opposition in the preaching of the Gospel. So many people have been angry with us because of our faith, but as time passes, God is changing the hearts of many people through prayer. My burden is to bring more and more people to Christ and plant more churches in unreached villages.
