Testimony of Conversion
My name is Paul Odera Onyango and I am married to Seline Onyango and we are blessed with three children: two boys and a girl, named Habil, Ezekiel, and Grace.
A friend of mine, Pastor Sam, invited me to a church he was pastoring in 1998 and as he preached, it occurred to me that I was not a Christian, as I had previously thought. In his sermon, he preached that sin has separated man from God, that man cannot save himself, and that salvation is only possible through Christ. It is God’s gift to man through Christ. He emphasised from Ephesians 2:8-9 that man is powerless to save himself. That statement disarmed me, a man who thought that I was good before God. After the sermon, I remember very clearly singing ‘Amazing grace how sweet the sound.' The song further spoke to me that I cannot save myself and confirmed what the preacher had said. After the service, I went to Sam and told him that I am a sinner and wanted to receive God’s gift of salvation and he invited me to his house where we further discussed this in several one-to-one Bible studies. I did trust in Christ as my sin bearer and saviour. Before, I had heavily trusted in my good works for salvation, given my background of being brought up in a religion with this emphasis. Now I am born again and I continue telling people not to trust on anything for salvation, but Christ alone. I thank God also for my son Habil who was recently saved before he left for boarding school. I had the priviledge of baptizing him at church and I pray that the rest of his siblings will see Christ as well.
I grew up in a Seventh Day Adventist church though I never took their teachings seriously. When I was married to Pastor Paul (before both of us got saved), I joined his religion. I thought that we were both saved in this religion until I started hearing the testimony of my husband's salvation and seeing changes in his life after he was saved in 1998. A lady from the church that my husband was attending (pastored then by our current pastor Sam) visited me at my work place and shared with me the Gospel of Christ Jesus. She talked about sin and how we can be saved from sin. After several days of her visiting me, I began to realize that I was a sinner before God and needed a saviour. I prayed and asked Jesus to save me. That is when I got saved and up until today, I am still serving my God and my Saviour.
