Constantin Gheoanca, known as Costel by his friends and fellow workers, is a church planter in Romania's capital city, Bucharest. He recently founded Adonai Church of Bucharest and is serving as its pastor. He is married and has two children. Costel speaks English very well and is an excellent translator. He has a great gift of sharing the Gospel with the people of Bucharest. In the following, Costel shares about a recent witnessing opportunity with a Roman Catholic woman.
Icould see that she was very religious. She even had an icon of the Virgin Mary on her laptop background. For a year, I had wanted to talk to her about Christ, but we always ended up talking about matters concerning the block of apartments where we live. Finally, God orchestrated a meeting.
This month, our apartment block had new elections for officers, but I decided not to run for another term as vice-president of the apartment facility. Because of this, I had a reason to meet with this lady, who is the apartment president, in order to thank her for her collaboration throughout the year. After a brief conversation, I kindly asked her if I might tell her something about salvation. She smiled and agreed.
I shared the Gospel with her for over an hour. She was amazed to hear that Christ did everything on Calvary. She believes in human effort for salvation, because that is what she is told in the Roman Catholic church. I explained to her about justification, regeneration, repentance, sanctification, and other truths from the Scriptures. I could see in her eyes that this was something totally new to her. It almost sounded too good to be true. However, when I told her that salvation was personal, she abruptly ended our discussion. She strongly believes that a devout person who is living can do something to save those who are already dead, even those who are in hell. Because of this, she did not like the idea that one can do nothing to obtain salvation after death. Despite this, I felt that we had a good discussion and that something of what I have told her will stay with her. Please join with me in praying for her.
