Sowing Gospel Seed
As we prepare this edition of the HeartCry Magazine, winter is passing, and spring is almost upon us. The weather grows warmer, the days lengthen, and the ground is thawing. Soon everything will be coming to life for another cycle of spring and summer until winter draws near again and causes all growth and fruit-bearing to cease.
In many ways, the passing of the seasons is an illustration of our brief and fleeting lives: we have only a certain number of days to grow and produce fruit before winter passes over us and we are called home to glory! It is in this context that the following words of Jesus serve as a correction for all our slothfulness and distracted wandering:
“We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.” – John 9:4
While we have strength and breath, we must not give way to idleness or lose ourselves in the entanglements of this world, but in obedience to the admonition of Hebrews, we must “lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and...run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). As the Apostle Paul explains, “all run, but only one receives the prize”; let us, therefore, run in such a way that we may win (I Corinthians 9:24).
The fields are white for harvest (John 4:35). There is so much to be done in Jesus’ name and so much that can be done in Jesus’ power. While it is true that the evangelization of the world in our generation is humanly impossible, it is not impossible for God or for those who rely upon His Word and power. Let us, like David, strengthen ourselves in the Lord (I Samuel 30:6) and serve the purpose of God in our own generation (Acts 13:36). Let us go out into this dark and dying world as lights, directing all men to the source of all light and life – Jesus Christ.
There are still so many places where the gospel has yet to be preached with clarity and power. Pray that God might prepare and send forth laborers into His harvest. Offer yourself to God for this purpose. Prepare yourself so that you might be a useful servant. Surrender yourself as a willing instrument to do His will in any place, under any circumstance, and at any cost!
