“And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus” (Acts 5:42).
Central Province Ministry
Our church is committed to Christ’s call to mission as we help pioneer a church in the southern part of our island’s central province. We continue to labor beside the Lord’s servants and the church in KL, where we’ve regularly traveled to teach God’s word and serve the church so that it might grow in maturity. We’ve committed to do this every month.
This past month, we had the opportunity to visit once again and teach God’s word to the pastors and congregation. I taught from Malachi 1:1-5 to the church in an evening service. During the day, from morning until evening I also taught Baptist doctrine to the pastors. Some of the material I taught covered the topics of dispensationalism and antinomianism, doctrines that are unbiblical and have unknowingly entered into the church in many places.
After spending two days in KL, I traveled to another part of the central province where I met with a young believer who’s a native of KL, but is now studying at a maritime academy. Our church is helping to fund his education. Our time together was filled with Bible teaching, prayer, and instruction about how to evangelize and disciple those on his campus. One reason why we help support him is so that we can have an influence in his life and help him minister to the other students. When he entered the academy, there was no Christian student fellowship. Only Catholics and Muslims had student groups. Our prayer is that God uses this young man to pioneer a Christian student fellowship so that there would be more young men and women who love the Lord Jesus and are used in the Great Commission where ever they might be called.
I thank the Lord that he continues to use one of our church members to oversee the discipleship ministry to college students without me being there. He’s currently leading a Bible study for new students on his campus. It’s encouraging to know that while I’m away teaching God’s word in other places, this young brother continues to lead this ministry with the Spirit’s help. Every month the students have a prayer service on the first week, Bible teaching on the second and third weeks, and a discussion of a biblical theme on the fourth week.
Bali and Timor Leste Ministries
Our church hopes to visit Dili, Timor Leste, at least every one or two months to strengthen the new church there. The church’s name in Dili is Getsemani Baptist Church, and HeartCry missionary Francisco leads them.
On our most recent trip, before arriving in Dili, I had the opportunity to visit HeartCry missionary Tirta and his wife since my flight was routed through their island. They were sent out of our church and have now been serving in that place for approximately one year. They are planning to begin church planting by inviting young people into their home for house church services. Hopefully, I can visit them every month or two.
On the first day in Dili, East Timor, I was welcomed by several church members from Aleiro village, a village about three hours from Dili. They have become refugees living temporarily in the house rented by Getsemani Baptist Church.
While there I taught on Bible doctrine, as it is summarized in the 1689 London Baptist Confession. As a Baptist church, we use this confession of faith to help us teach biblical doctrine. I emphasize that the Bible, above all else, is authoritative. No doctrinal summaries or confessions of faith can be imbued with the same authority as scripture. While we have great respect for the 1689 Baptist Confession, we do realize that it can be modified to better fit the current condition in Timor Leste without sacrificing its meaning.
I also taught from Malachi 1:1-5, as well as the Bible teaching material “Who are Christians?” We were also able to answer many questions that the congregants had concerning the church. These questions were fundamental to them because they are just beginning their church plant. We are laboring, then, so that this church is firmly founded and directed by God’s word.
Pray for us,
